Retinal Health
Combining Dr. Nota's advanced education, training and experience with our Ocular Coherent tomography technology (OCT), you will receive the best of care for your retinal health.

Dr. Nota minimizes the ocular morbidity and severe vision loss related to retinal disease through diligent monitoring and timely consultation or referral. At our office, dilated fundus photos are recommended annually to monitor the status of your retina.

The retina is the light-sensitive layer of tissue that lines the inside of the eye and sends visual messages through the optic nerve to the brain.

When the retina is torn, it is lifted or pulled from its normal position and thick liquid called vitreous can seep through the hole. The fluid accumulates underneath the retina causing the retina to peel away from the back of the eye. If not properly treated, retinal detachment can cause permanent vision loss.

Some of the risk factors or main causes for retinal detachment include aging, cataract surgery, thinning of the outer retina known as lattice degeneration, a high degree of nearsightedness (called myopia), blunt trauma directly to the eye and head trauma.

Flashes and floaters as well as loss of lower visual field (as seen with our comprehensive eye examination technology here at San Clemente Optometry) are the hallmark symptoms of retinal detachment.

If any of these symptoms suddenly appear, please call us immediately for consultation and treatment options with Dr. Nota.
